West Waterford's best kept secret nestles snugly in the Drum hills just off the Waterford Cork road (N25) situated between Dungarvan and Youghal. An Seanachaí Bar & Restaurant has remained unspoilt by the advances of the twentieth century and has remained one of the great traditional Irish pubs and eating houses. An Seanachaí continues a tradition that began way back in the early 1900's during the famine years. Steeped in Irish history An Seanachaí dates back to pre famine years when it was a traditional Irish Country Farm Cottage. In 1847 a room was added to cater for the hoards of mourners who came to bury their dead in the adjacent Famine Graveyard. For 160 years An Seanachaí has continued to serve up delicious, wholesome and sometimes award winning food. Young and old have gathered in this lovely hill top hostelry for a bit of craic, a pint of stout and a drop of whiskey.
After six lonely years of near dereliction An Seanachaí Bar & Restaurant has been lovingly restored to its former glory and was re-opened in June 2006 by new owners Johnnie & Mags Hurley and their family. Re-awaking the sleeping giant the Hurley's, restored and renovated An Seanachaí protecting and maintaining the old world charm and traditional look. An Seanachaí proudly stands with traditional thatched roof; hand cut stone flags, traditional old furnishings abounding throughout the building. The buildings wrap around an outdoor courtyard which connects the old with the new giving a tastefully modern twist for those who wish to dine al fresco or simply enjoy a quiet pint and a smoke. The courtyard is partially covered for any outdoor celebrations be it a family reunion , post wedding celebrations etc and is serviced by an outdoor bar. The long bar is the place to meet with friends and enjoy a drink and a chat. A welcoming log and turf fire burns brightly in the original fire place in the old kitchen, re-awakening the senses and scents of days past.
Only 5 minute drive from Grattan Square in Dungarvan, but feels like years when you relax and enjoy the rustic surroundings......
